A Desire To Go Smaller

I always knew I could go smaller than my first-ever piece of micro-engraving, which was the Lord’s Prayer engraved on the head of a gold pin.

In 2022 I was challenged by a journalist friend of mine, to go smaller to engrave a smaller version of the Lord’s Prayer. I attempted to engrave 234 letters onto a gold disc in the eye of a needle.

The BBC instantly picked up on my desire to go smaller, and it made the news in 32 countries around the world. During my apprenticeship in the 1960s, it was tradition for apprentices to attempt to engrave the prayer as small as possible. If they managed to fit it onto a sixpence they were pleased.

At the time, I never thought I would be able to engrave at such microscopic levels.
