When I started attempting to engrave all 278 letters of the Lord's Prayer on the head of a pin, I wasted a lot of time. Many times I would reach the edge of the pin and find I was halfway through a word. More often than not I'd get to the bottom of the pin then realise I still had another five or six lines of lettering left to engrave.
So I started drawing a sketch on a large piece of card, with lots of guidelines on it and keeping it in front of me while working. It was a 'Eureka' moment for me. Something so simple, that made life easier. Why hadn't I thought of doing this years ago?
Every quote or phrase is started by engraving each letter down the middle, and then working out, one letter at a time, on either side until it is finished. This makes the centre line the most important guideline in the sketch.
The actual pin i engraved had a head diameter of 2mm which I painstakingly engraved 278 characters upon. It took me many attempts to complete and several times I got right to the very end and had to start again.
